The saga continues….
I was hoping by the time I sat down to write this follow-up blog post that the proverbial ‘road’ would be mapped out and the way clear of all obstacles and debris (yes I hear you all laughing). I had hoped that I could impart words of wisdom and project a superior air of clarity and confidence, but alas it is not to be (gee Sal, that’s a shocker)!
The road that Green Cathedral (aka Sal & Tim Scarce & team) have had to traverse these past 12 months has been more like a trek through the deep amazon. Here is where I’ll stop with the analogies and spare you the wit and clever thinking and just speak plain.
It has been F*#@ing tough, it has been gruelling and it has been at times soul shattering. On the upside, it has also been fortifying, encouraging and hopeful and it is these times when you realise just what you are made of and how strong your relationship is.
So, why the dramatics? Why is it so tough when we are so obviously ‘killing it’ I mean our socials look good don’t they?
Well let’s pick-up where the last story (Part 1) ended.
The objective: To focus on life and family by closing the Melbourne shop (although Google refuses to believe us and it still shows up in searches), we bought a boat, a camper-trailer, downsized our workforce and decided to maintain steady pace rather then push for growth.
Our reality: the boat hasn’t seen the ocean in about 4 months, the camper-trailer hasn’t been opened up since February 2017 so we sold it 2 weeks ago, and with less staff, we seem to be working more to cover the deficit…so much for the live life to the fullest theory.
Late 2017 we opened ourselves up to taking on a few (4 actually) big commercial projects, all whilst continuing our furniture orders and with only 2 full-time makers on the team…the last of the 4 projects is about to be completed and we can say with 100% earnest – Thank F*@k! and we will NEVER do that again.
In November in the hope of stream-lining our production, we reduced the number of product designs that we offer down to our most popular items. Although our old designs are no longer on our website you can you can still see them on our @greencathedral instagram page and they may become available in limited quantities throughout the year.
We have missed the excitement and thrill of designing new products, and trust me when I say we have pages and pages of good design ideas we would love to produce. And therein lies the rub.
We are too small to keep producing our 150 different product designs and variations (including customisations), complete custom projects and keep up with our existing customer demand. So what do we do?
Well here is what we are aiming for:
- Catch up and complete all our outstanding orders
- Build up stock of our most popular designs; Babanees Stools & Benches, Mini Babanees Packages and our Bella & Archie Beds, in order to reduce lead times
- Re-awaken our creativity and excitement by designing and manufacturing small quantities (20 or less) of limited edition designs.
- Implement our VIP program for our very loyal clients.
All our new designs will be shared with our VIP clients and our email database first. So if you have not subscribed, now would be a good time to do so.
As Green Cathedral heads into our 10th year of business, there is a question of where-to next for us and is there more that we still want to achieve at Green Cathedral?; Where is the next ‘road not taken’ going to lead?
I guess, just like us, you will have to wait and see.
Thanks for following!
